If your puppy bites harder in the evening, ignores everything you say, and behaves like a tiny gremlin around 5pm, you probably don't have a training problem. You have a sleep problem. Overtiredness is the single most underrated cause of puppy chaos, and it is also the easiest one to fix.
How much sleep does a puppy need?
An 8 to 12 week old puppy needs roughly 18 to 20 hours of sleep in every 24. That is not a typo. They are awake for short bursts of about 1 to 2 hours, then they need to go back down. By 6 months it drops to around 15 to 18 hours, and adult dogs settle around 12 to 14.
| Age | Sleep per 24h | Awake window between naps |
|---|---|---|
| 8-10 weeks | 18-20 hours | about 45-60 minutes |
| 10-16 weeks | 18-19 hours | about 1-1.5 hours |
| 4-6 months | 16-18 hours | about 2 hours |
| 6-12 months | 14-16 hours | 2-3 hours |
What an overtired puppy looks like
Almost identical to an overtired toddler: frantic zoomies, biting that gets sharper and more persistent, ignoring cues they knew an hour ago, grabbing trouser legs, barking at nothing, and being unable to settle even though they clearly need to. If your puppy has been awake for more than about 90 minutes and is behaving badly, try a nap before you try training.
A realistic day at 8 to 12 weeks
- Wake and out. Straight outside for a pee, no detours.
- Breakfast, then out again 10 to 15 minutes later.
- Awake window, 45 to 60 minutes: a short training moment (2 to 3 minutes), a sniffing game, some gentle handling, a little free play.
- Nap, 1 to 2 hours, in the crate or pen with the door shut. This is the part people skip.
- Repeat that cycle through the day.
- Evening: keep the last hour calm and boring. No wrestling, no visitors, no new toys. Last potty, lights out at the same time each night.
How to enforce a nap without a battle
A puppy who is overtired will fight sleep, exactly like a toddler. Do not wait for them to settle on their own.
- Make sure they have just been to the toilet - a full bladder is a real reason to protest.
- Put them in the crate or pen with something to chew. A stuffed frozen toy turns the crate into the good place.
- Cover part of the crate to dim the light and cut visual stimulation.
- Leave the room. Your presence keeps a tired puppy switched on.
- Expect 2 to 5 minutes of complaining, then a crash. If it goes past 10 minutes and escalates, take them out for a potty trip and try again.
Night sleep is a different problem
Night waking is usually bladder, not behaviour. Age in months plus one is roughly the number of hours they can hold it, so an 8 week old puppy genuinely cannot make it through the night yet. Keep the crate next to your bed for the first week or two, do one calm and boring 2am trip, and move the crate gradually later. Most puppies sleep through somewhere between 12 and 16 weeks.
When to speak to your vet
Sleep that never improves, a puppy who seems exhausted but cannot settle for weeks, restlessness with panting at night, or a sudden change in sleep in an older puppy are worth a vet conversation rather than a training one.
