1. Breathe. Is this normal?
Yes. Some crying on nights 1 to 3 is normal - your puppy just left his whole family. Barely eating on day one, crying when alone, and an accident right after a break are normal too. It usually settles between week 12 and 16.
2. What do I do right now?
- Potty check first. Age in months + 1 = the hours he can hold it. An 8-week puppy cannot make it through the night yet.
- Make the 2am trip boring. No talking, no play, no lights if you can help it. Out, pee, back in.
- Scent beats gadgets. A worn, unwashed t-shirt in the crate helps more than anything you can buy.
- Keep him close this week. Crate next to your bed. Move it out gradually later, not tonight.
- Let him settle. If his needs are met, a few minutes of whining is okay - that is how he learns to self-soothe.
- Do not start a habit you cannot keep. Whatever you do at 2am tonight, you are teaching it.
3. The bladder rule
| Age | Roughly how long he can hold it |
|---|---|
| 8 weeks | about 2 hours |
| 3 months | about 4 hours |
| 4 months | about 5 hours |
| 6 months | about 7 hours |
Age in months + 1 = hours, capped at around 8. It is a guide, not a rule - some puppies need more breaks.
4. When to call your vet instead
Call your vet - not a forum - if you see any of these:
- Frantic trembling, panic, or crying that sounds like pain
- Crying that never improves after several weeks
- Night accidents despite proper breaks (can be a urinary infection)
- Refusing food and water, vomiting, or diarrhoea
5. Tomorrow, in one line
Same wake-up time, potty every 1 to 2 hours while awake, three short calm training moments, one nap in the crate with the door shut, lights out at the same time. Boring and repeated beats clever and inconsistent.
Pup Compass helps you feel calm and prepared. It is never a substitute for your vet or a certified trainer.
